One Sydney Harbour, Barangaroo NSW

Elephants Foot transformed waste and recycling management at Barangaroo's iconic One Sydney Harbour project

Elephants Foot Chute Solutions played a pivotal role in transforming waste and recycling management at One Sydney Harbour, a landmark development in Barangaroo, Sydney. Commissioned by Lendlease, one of the world’s leading property and infrastructure groups, our team delivered advanced automated solutions across three key stages of the project.

In the first two stages, Elephants Foot designed and installed a dual chute system tailored to the significant demands of this high-rise development. Each 610mm chute was engineered to efficiently handle high waste volumes, while the automated Linear Track system streamlined the handling and compacting of full bins. This innovation eliminated manual handling, reduced labour requirements, and delivered a faster, safer, and more efficient waste process.

For the third stage, Elephants Foot introduced the innovative eDiverter system — a proprietary solution enabling a single chute to manage both recycling and general waste. This intelligent diverter mechanism automatically segregates waste streams into the appropriate linear system, improving sustainability while reducing the need for multiple chutes.

By minimising infrastructure costs and maximising operational efficiency, the eDiverter system demonstrates Elephants Foot’s commitment to innovation and sustainable waste management practices.

Our work at One Sydney Harbour reinforces Elephants Foot’s reputation as a trusted partner in delivering sophisticated, future-ready waste management solutions. By combining advanced waste technologies with a strong focus on efficiency, safety, and sustainability, we continue to set new benchmarks for waste handling in large-scale developments.

  • Lower infrastructure costs by eliminating the need for multiple chutes
  • Enhanced sustainability through intelligent waste stream separation

Western Sydney International Airport, Luddenham NSW

Western Sydney International Airport Smart Waste Chute Systems

Western Sydney International Airport is a major national transport infrastructure project delivered by Multiplex Constructions, supporting aviation, logistics, retail, and passenger operations within a large‑scale precinct in Western Sydney. As a critical piece of public infrastructure with continuous daily operations, the development required a highly robust, intelligent, and compliant waste management solution capable of supporting multiple operational zones.

To meet these requirements, Elephants Foot Chute Solutions supplied and installed multiple high‑capacity waste chute systems across international, domestic, and landside buildings. The systems were engineered to support high‑volume waste handling while maintaining safety, segregation, and long‑term operational reliability.

The project incorporates 650mm custom galvanised steel chute pipes with side‑hinged, fire‑rated self‑closing intake doors across all active levels. Each intake door was upgraded with IntelliChute smart chute technology, enabling real‑time monitoring, controlled access, and integration with broader building systems.

Multiple odour relief vent and wash‑down cleaning systems are installed throughout the network to provide continuous airflow and automated internal cleaning. These systems improve hygiene, reduce odors, and protect chute performance across high‑use operational areas.

At discharge level, waste is transferred through engineered Type A discharge systems with major offsets to suit complex basement layouts and ceiling constraints. Discharge points integrate with compactors, smart bin weighing systems, RFID data tracking, and a wide range of mobile garbage bins to support efficient servicing and sustainability reporting.

The IntelliChute upgrade includes HMI touch‑screen control panels, blockage identification, and full BMS integration, allowing facility managers to monitor chute performance, identify issues early, and support the airport’s long‑term safety and sustainability objectives. The completed installation delivers one of the most advanced smart waste chute systems implemented within an Australian transport infrastructure project.

Frankston Hospital, Frankston VIC

Elephants Foot Chute Solutions was engaged by Lendlease to design and install an advanced chute solution for the new Frankston Hospital development. The project required high-capacity vertical transport for waste and linen over 11 levels, demanding both durability and compliance with strict healthcare standards

The building features two separate systems: a triple chute system for waste and recycling, alongside a dedicated linen chute system. Each chute was constructed using heavy-duty materials to ensure long-term durability and operational performance.

Fire-rated self-closing hopper doors with smoke seals were installed across all service levels, while mid-level offsets and custom discharge room configurations were engineered to align seamlessly with the building’s structure and operational flow.

To maintain hygiene and effective odour control, each system was equipped with odour relief vents and top-level flushing spray mechanisms.

The basement discharge rooms were fitted with advanced carousel systems — one configured for 1100L mobile garbage bins (MGBs) and the other for linen trolleys — ensuring streamlined, compliant, and efficient waste management operations.
